Wedding Films
I’ve seen it all….
In the last 7 years, as a musician in a wedding/corporate events band, I’ve played at dozens and dozens of weddings. In just about every function venue, winery, and Uncle’s back paddock all over the North East. This puts me in a unique position to observe just about every video production style out there, from full on multi camera (“I know I’m in your way, but I need to stand right here to get the shot”!) to the dude with a gimbal wearing shorts and a backwards baseball hat. Yet despite these wildly different approaches, it feels like a lot of the end results are remarkably similar.
There’s no shortage of great looking wedding video’s out there. And if that was the only goal, I would even bother putting my hand up and entering the ring. But it seems to me the thing that’s missing is the same thing I specialise in in my corporate and community filming projects - the story. The back story…. and for a couple getting married, wow, what a story! So here it is, my hand being raised.
I’d say, if I was after a slogan, that I produce a film about your marriage, not just the wedding. And think about it, of all the guests at your wedding (not to mention those who can’t make it) they know some, but not all of your story. Snippets. Or perhaps they are close with your partner and only know about you through them. Work colleagues. Relatives. What if, through some time spent before the big day, you were able to reveal a little more about how you ended up at this marvellous wedding event? Your history. Your dreams. Your marriage as well as your wedding. A film that even those who know you well will know even more, those that aren’t there feel as though they are, and you’re left with something that serves as a permanent record of where you were at at the time. (You can see an example below.)
My approach to filming any event, is that of a documentary filmmaker. I capture what happens, and try and be as ‘fly on the wall’ as possible. Generally the photographer will stage the shots, group shots, couple poses etc, and I capture that without interferring too much. That said, the beautiful locations in the North East always feature. Cinematic as well as story.
I don’t charge for time, or number of operators. I capture the full wedding day, from preparation, through to ceremony, reception and speeches, and the festivities after. And most importantly some time filming before the wedding. Then offer a number of packages depending on the level of content required.
Worth saying here is that I have knocked back wedding work in the past. And although I’ve been second camera operator on a few, I didn’t want to jump into a crowded market unless I was offering something substantially unique. And just as importantly, the way a wedding is organised and structured makes a huge difference to the type of end product possible. Stressed guests or couples, or relatives, because of poor organisation pervades the whole crowd. How can you show a mood of joy and excitement when the vibe is hot/cranky/thirsty/bored…. ? Which is why I offer a discount for my video services to clients of Courtney (CC Wedding planning).
I’ve been a part of too-many-to-count functions and weddings that Courtney has managed. Smooth. Great communication. And most importantly - happy couples and guests. Even her own, which I filmed!
